Music The 90s

98 Degrees

98 Degrees is an American pop and R&B boy band consisting of four members: Nick Lachey, Justin Jeffre, Jeff Timmons, and Drew Lachey. They are different than most boy bands because they assembled on their own and then got singed, other than a record label putting the group together themselves.

They were trying to make it right at the height of popularity of other pop groups such as the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys. To differentiate themselves in the market, they portrayed themselves as more of a R&B group as well as promoting that they wrote their own music.

They began to catch the public’s eye in 1998 by appearing in the hit animated movie Mulan and became stars when their album, 98 Degrees and Rising, went 4-times platinum. They had two top 5 Billboard Hot 100 songs from that album: “Because of You” and “The Hardest Thing”

The following year, they released their Christmas album entitled This Christmas, which went platinum in a moth after its release and produced a top 40 single “The Gift”. After a few more top charting songs, the band took a hiatus in 2003, but did not officially disband.

In this time, Nick Lachey pursued a solo singing career and married singer Jessica Simpson to combine for a somewhat power-couple. Lachey filled every 98 Degrees headline (if there was one) until 2012 when they announced that they were making a onetime comeback.

Even more recently, in January 2013, they announced they were going on a joint tour with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. In May 2013, the 98 Degrees even released a new album, 2.0, so it seems that 98 Degrees still has a little heat left in their careers.
