Daria was an animated series, created by Glenn Eichler that aired on MTV from 1997 to 2002. Daria Morgendorffer, was not your average high school student. Although growing up in a suburban town, she was known for being a cynical wallflower. Daria despised and rebelled against her peers’ love for popularity and conformity – her sister, Quinn, being one of them. The series tried to relate to many of the same scenarios that any typical high school student goes through, popular or wallflower, the show incorporated it all.
Daria’s appearance never changed throughout the show. She always wore thick black glasses, a green blazer, and a black skirt with combat boots. Her best friend Jane Lane was a fellow wallflower, who was one of the few people to understand Daria. However, she did have a few love interests throughout the show. Her first crush was Jane’s brother, Trent. Unfortunately, Daria was the only one interested. Finally, a relationship blossomed between herself and Tom Sloane, her intellectual partner.
Daria’s monotonous voice combined with her dry and sarcastic humor, made the show unlike others at the time. She didn’t have a filter when mocking or ridiculing people she did not like. She did it with an intellectual twist though, making it hard for them to even realize what she was doing.
The character, Daria, first appeared in the show Beavis and Butt-head. This is when producers decided to do a spinoff, using only her character. Daria not only ran for five seasons, but also had two television movies. In 2000, the first movie was made, ‘Is It Fall Yet?’ – documenting the time when Daria and her peers were preparing for their summer.
The second movie ‘Is It College Yet?’ was the series finale in 2002. The finale focused on the problems faced by many graduating high school seniors: choosing a college, high school relationships, and more. Daria was a refreshing and innovative series that many of us who grew up in the ‘90s will remember.
