Good Burger

Good Burger is a 1997 comedy movie directed by Brian Robbins and starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell. It was based on the long-running sketch of the same name on Nickelodeon’s variety show All That, in which Thompson and Mitchell both starred. It was written by All That showrunner Dan Schneider and marked Thompson’s first starring role in a feature film, as well as Mitchell’s film debut.

Mitchell reprises his All That role of Ed, the chronically incompetent cashier at fast food restaurant Good Burger. Thompson plays Dexter, a character created for the film whose joyride in his mother’s car ends abruptly when he swerves to avoid Ed and hits his teacher’s car. To pay for the damages, Dexter also obtains a job at Good Burger, but his new position is threatened by a new burger chain in town: Mondo Burger. Boasting bigger patties than Good Burger, Mondo is poised to push its smaller competition out of business, but Ed concocts a new special sauce that attracts more customers than ever before. Infuriated, Mondo Burger’s owner resorts to illegal tactics in order to destroy his rivals, pouring poison in the Good Burger meat and kidnapping Dexter and Ed. The young duo must escape and expose the plot before it’s too late to save their beloved restaurant.

Good Burger found success among All That viewers who were fans of the original sketch, but left critics cold. Most of Good Burger‘s acclaim was directed at Thompson and Mitchell, whose performances were noted as the high points of the movie. The two went on to enjoy successful careers in comedy; Thompson joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2003, and Mitchell has since appeared in Mystery Men, The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle, and numerous television series.
