The 90s TV Shows

Recess

Recess was an animated television series that focused six elementary school friends and their misadventures around the school yard. The cartoon was produced by Disney and ran from 1997 to 2001.

Recess included a diverse and colorful cast of characters. There was T.J. Detweiler, the charismatic leader; Ashley Spinelli, the tough girl; Vince LeSalle; the jock; Gretchen Grundler, the smartest girl in school, Mikey Blumberg, the big guy with a fond love for poetry; and Gus Griswald, the wimp.

The series would follow the six schoolmates and their lives as they went through trials of classes, parents, and friendship. The cartoon also showed how the friends and school kids would form their own society and cliques complete with a government and class structure.

Most episodes would show the cast hanging out during recess where they would deal with problems such as teacher’s pet and spy Randall Weems, “King” Bob and the older kids, the chaotic kindergardeners, and the rich Ashley snobs.

Recess was well received by the public and has since become a cult favorite. The show was even featured in their own direct-to-video movies, and a crossover appearance with Disney’s Lilo and Stitch. The series was also one of the longest running shows in Disney’s Saturday morning lineup of shows.
