The 90s TV Shows

Roseanne

Roseanne was an American TV series based around a character created by Roseanne Barr. The show aired on the ABC network from 1988 until 1997. Roseanne was based around a family, the Conners, living in the suburbs of Illinois. The working-class family consisted of Roseanne, her husband Dan and their three children. The show was a pioneer in television to represent a working-class family, especially a working mother.

Both Roseanne and Dan were working parents, something many shows did not portray at this time. In Season 1, Roseanne was an employee for a plastics company and Dan was a construction worker. Throughout the series, Roseanne and Dan work numerous jobs, from being a waitress to opening up their own motorcycle repair shop. The plots for many of the shows were based on what people go through on a daily basis. The show depicted many real-life situations working-class people in the U.S. were going through. For this reason, the show was well received by fans and critics.

The show incorporated many real subjects such as poverty, drug and alcoholism, obesity, race, gay rights, social class, and many others. From 1989 to 1990, the second season of the series, Roseanne became the most watched television series that year. The show continued to be a success, ranking in the top 5 most watched show for six seasons.

Since the last season, Roseanne is still being aired on channels such as Nick at Nite, TV Land, and Oxygen. Many of the actors and actresses were not only nominated but also won awards for their performances in this series, including Emmy Awards, People’s Choice Awards and Golden Globe Awards. All nine series of Roseanne were released on DVD by Anchor Bay Entertainment in 2005.
