Wild at Heart

Wild at Heart is an American crime thriller written and directed by David Lynch, starring Nicolas Cage, Laura Dern, and Willem Defoe. Despite moderate box office success, the film received, at best, mixed reviews. Lynch estimated that about 80 people left the film’s first screening. This didn’t stop it, however, from going on to win the coveted Palm d’Or at the 1990 Cannes Film Festival.

The plot revolves around the tumultuous affair of two lovers, Sailor (Cage) and Lula (Dern), and their attempt to escape the overbearing influence of Marietta Fortune, Lula’s psychotic mom. Enraged at the idea that Lula loves Sailor, Marietta contracts a hit man to kill Sailor. Sailor kills the hit man and is subsequently sentenced to jail. Upon his release, Sailor is picked up by Lula and the two take a wild drive toward California.

Originally filled with sex, Elvis songs, and speed metal, their joyride takes a turn for the worst when Marietta sends a private detective and a gang leader after them. While Sailor deals with various attempts on his life from friends and foes alike, Lula discovers she is pregnant with Sailor’s child. When a robbery goes horribly wrong, Sailor is again sentenced to jail, but this time, when he’s released, he is picked up by both Lula and his son. He originally tries to shirk this responsibility and go off on his own, but, in the end, chooses to marry Lula.
