The 90s TV Shows

Babylon 5

Babylon 5 was an American TV series that aired from 1993 to 1998 based on different species in the year 2258.  The species portrayed were from five different civilizations including humans, minbari, narn, centauri, and vorlons.  Other species living in the League of Non-Aligned Worlds, included drazi, brakiri, vree and more.  The show was created and developed by J. Michael Straczynski and starred Bruce Boxleitner, Michael O’Hare, Claudia Christian and many more.

Babylon 5 was the result of Babylon 1, 2 and 3 getting destroyed and Babylon 4 vanishing.  Babylon 5 is located in the Epsilon Eridani system. The five-mile long planet incorporated different elements from all of the species that were living on it.  It was known as a gathering spot for different species to try and create peace through trade and cooperation.  Unfortunately, this never happened and the planet became the center for an interstellar war.

The major themes throughout this series were based on order and chaos, war and peace, religion, sacrifice, dreams and visions, and addiction.  The commander of the civilization is faced with multiple problems that need to be diminished in order to create peace between the different empires.

Babylon 5 was well received over the years by both fans and critics.  They show went on to win multiple Emmy Awards and other prestigious awards.  The franchise of Babylon 5 also went on to grow, incorporating comics, novels, and television movies were produced.  Babylon 5 was also later released on VHS tapes and DVD.  A spinoff was also made, called Crusade, which aired on CBS in 1999.  This series did not have the success that Babylon 5 had though, only lasting one season.
