The 90s TV Shows

California Dreams

California Dreams is a teen sitcom that aired on Saturday mornings from 1992 to 1996 as part of NBC’s teen block. It was created by Ronald B Solomon and Brett Dewey of Saved by the Bell fame. The show ran for 5 seasons and 76 episodes.

California Dreams followed a group of hip teens who formed a rock band called The Dreams. When they aren’t on tour or recording their dreamy songs, the band deals with real life teen issues like make-up and stuff. Throughout the seasons, new members are added to the band and older ones sporadically abandon ship.

The program was originally envisioned as a family show, that only happened to have a teen band in it. By season two, however, executives at NBC insisted California Dreams take a different direction and focus on the younger cast members.

In 2010, 13 years after the show’s cancellation, the cast reunited to appear on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon where they sang the California Dreams theme song after a short interview by the host.

California Dreams is criticized to this day as a “Saved by the Bell ripoff”. However, this accusation is unfounded because the kids in Saved by the Bell were not in a band. Like all real musicians these kids put the music first, which is why they were such teen superstars.
