Eyes Wide Shut

Eyes Wide Shut is a drama and erotic thriller centered around the sexual exploits of a wealthy NYC doctor and a night long misadventure involving sex and a secret society. The film is based on Arthur Schnitzler’s 1926 novella Dream Story. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick and was released in 1999.

Eyes Wide Shut shares the story of Dr. Bill Harford who becomes jealous after his wife, Alice, tells him that she has had a sexual fantasy involving another man. Enraged, the normally faithful Bill becomes dead set only having a sexual encounter of his own.

Bill then rushed away mid-debate with his wife to the call of a friend, whose father has just passed away. Following the the visit, Bill spurns the advances of his grieving friend and turns her away. Following the attempted seduction, Bill sets out into the city lights and night.

What follows next is night of sexual intrigue and fantasy as Bill encounters a prostitute, an interruption of underage sex, a masquerade ball, and a mysterious and deadly sexual society. The following day, Bill must deal the night’s occurrences and events, while also dealing with his own marital dilemmas.

Eyes Wide Shut opened to mostly favorable reviews and would go on to gross 0ver $160 million worldwide. However, the film was also involved in a bit of controversy as many of the sexual scenes had to be altered in order for the film to maintain an R-rating rather than an NC17 label.

The film will also go down as Stanley Kubrick’s final film as the legendary filmmaker passed away just days before the film’s release.
