Hocus Pocus

Hocus Pocus is a comedy horror film centered around three 300-year old witches who have been brought back from the dead to absorb the life force of a town’s children. The film was directed by Kenny Ortega and was released in 1993.

Hocus Pocus begins in Salem,  Massachusetts with 3 witches known as The Sanderson Sisters being hung for witchcraft and murdering children. However, before they are executed, they cast a spell in which they can be resurrected by having a virgin light a black candle in their cottage on Halloween night.

300 years later, a new kid in town by the name of Max Dennison is out escorting his younger sister, Dani,  around on Halloween night when he meets up with his crush, Allison.  Hoping to impress her, the three travel to the Sanderson’s cottage to explore.

Not believing in the witches or the legends, Max lights the candle releasing the sisters, who vow to become immortal by absorbing all the children in the town.

Max, Dani, and Alison escape the sisters with the help of a cat named Binx, who was cursed by the witches in the past. He explains that he was once a boy who only wanted to protect his sister and vowed to to do everything in his power to see the witches vanquished.

Throughout the rest of the night we see the 4 heros battle the witches in a night filled with magic, comedy, musical numbers and even a zombie.

While it initially received mixed reviews, Hocus Pocus has gone on to become a Halloween favorite and mainstay. Bette Middler’s performance is often revered as the standout of the film as she also sings a cover of ” I Put a Spell on You”.
