Oakley, Inc. is a sports performance equipment company based in Foothill Ranch, California. It produces sports visors, ski/snowboard goggles, watches, apparel, backpacks, shoes, optical frames, but is best known for their sunglasses.
Oakley was started in 1975 by James Jannard in his garage with only a $300 investment. The company was actually named after his dog. He began by selling motorcycle grips out of his car at motocross events, which he called “The Oakley Grip”. They were made by a material patented by Jannard called “Unobtanium,” which is still used to make nose pieces and ear socks for sunglasses.
In 1980, Jannard released his first pair of goggles called the O-Frame that sported the classic Oakley “O” and they rapidly increased in popularity. In 1983 they made their first ski goggles and soon after their first pair of sunglasses. By 1995, the company went public and raised $230 million.
Oakley products are still widely popular today, just seeing the “O” on a product automatically gives it credibility. Their gear has been tested in extreme athletic conditions, but is still fashionable in any setting.
