The 90s TV Shows

Olmec

Olmec was the mascot and announcer of the Nickelodeon sports/game show Legends of the Hidden Temple. He was a giant stone talking head who announced the rules and prizes of the show.

The Olmec character derives from the Olmec civilization who reigned around modern day Mexico from roughly 1500 BCE to 400 BCE. These people are famous for leaving massive statues of heads around the continent, explaining Olmec’s shape on the TV show. The Olmec’s were also the first peoples associated with bloodletting and the Mesoamerican Ball Game which both descended into other ancient Mesoamerican cultures like the Mayans.

Olmec was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. He knew the stories behind all of the artifacts hidden throughout the temple in the game, which were sometimes real and sometimes fictional.

Before Olmec’s spirit was trapped into a giant stone head to narrate children’s games, he was a proud jaguar named “Prrcy Pawsworth”. Prrcy was respected by fellow cats for his virile physical form and his striking manner of slinking. It was said that when Percy slinked your way, you went his way. If you know what I’m sayin’. Which was an ancient Olmec phrase that we still use today.
