Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, typically referred to together as The Olsen Twins, are actresses and fashion designers. They made their debut as Michelle Tanner in the popular 1990’s sitcom Full House, a show they remained on for its entirety. Through numerous television, movie, and video projects, these two became some of the wealthiest women in the world.
The Olsen twins were raised by Jarnette and David Olsen in Sherman Oaks, California. At 6 months, they starred in Full House as the same character, taking turns playing the role from 1987 all the way until 1995. While working on Full House, the twins, helped along by their family, founded Dualstar, a production company, in 1993. Dualstar would serve as the twins’ business platform and was responsible for their subsequent films and videos including Double, Double, Toil and Trouble, How the West Was Fun, and a series of musical mystery videos called The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley.
As the duo got older, they began to star in more mainstream films, including It Takes Two and New York Minute. New York Minute was Ashley Olsen’s last appearance on film, but Mary-Kate went on to star in other movies, like 2009’s The Wackness. More than just actresses, the Olsen twins were a veritable brand of their own, inspiring lines of clothes, shoes, purses, books, magazines, video games, and CDs.
In recent years, the two have taken to designing fashion. They are well-known for their “ashcan” look, similar to the boho-chic popularized by Kate Moss and Sienna Miller in Great Britain. In 2007 they started their own line, known as “The Row”, and have gone on to produce many different clothing lines.
