Sharon Stone is an American actress, producer, and former fashion model. She achieved international fame and attention for her role in Basic Instinct. Her role in Martin Scorsese’s Casino.
Born in Meadville, Pennsylvania, Sharon Stone showed promise at an early age. She quit high school in 1977 and moved to New York to become a fashion model. She was signed to the Ford Modeling Agency in New York, and went on to have a very successful career from there. In the 80’s, she decided fashion modeling wasn’t for her, and quit to become an actress. She had a few extra and small roles, notably her role in Woody Allen’s Stardust Memories. From there, she spent a lot of time doing acting for television shows like Magnum P.I., but scored some roles in movies like King Solomon’s Mines and Above The Law.
The film that made her a star, however, was Paul Verhoeven’s Basic Instinct. Starring as Catherine Tramell, a brilliant, bisexual serial killer, Stone shocked audiences with her upfront sexuality. One famous scene, involving a full-on shot of the actress’s genitalia, garnered a lot of media attention and controversy. Stone claimed she had no idea the shot would be so blatant, but Verhoeven denied her claim.
While she went on to star in many other movies, none of them have been met with the same success and acclaim as Basic Instinct.
