The Sixth Sense

The Sixth Sense is a suspenseful drama directed by M. Night Shyamalan and starring Bruce Willis, Haley Joel Osment, and Toni Collette. Nominated for six Academy Awards, this movie was not only a critical sensation, but a massive success at the box office, grossing over $670 million.

One night, child psychologist Malcolm Crowe (Willis) is visited by a deranged ex-patient of his. In a fit of rage, the patient wounds Crowe and kills himself right in front of him. The following fall, Crowe begins to treat a boy with symptoms similar to his ex-patient. The boy, Cole Sear (Osment), suffers from acute visions of dead and tormented people. Crowe dedicates more and more of his time to helping the boy as his psychological problems increase in intensity. Meanwhile, Cole’s mother, Lynn (Collette) grows increasingly dismayed by her son’s disturbed condition.

Crowe councils Cole to try and communicate with the dead people he sees. Doing this, Cole realizes these dead people don’t know they are dead, that he needs to help them come to terms with their pain and move on to the afterlife. This realization improves Cole’s mental health and sociability; he gradually makes more friends at school and even lands the lead in his school play. Crowe believes his work is done and returns back home only to make an alarming discovery: he, too, is dead. He died the night his patient shot him. This knowledge helps him finally move on and leave the world of the living.
