Smash Mouth

Smash Mouth is a rock band that formed in California in 1994. They play a mix of alternative rock, ska, pop, and throwback pop, having released a number hit sensations like “All Star” and “Walkin’ on the Sun,” as well as covers of older songs like “I’m a Believer.”

Smash Mouth is led by vocalist Steve Harwell, who formed the band with his manager Kevin Coleman. Harwell, who had previously been a rap musician, was introduced to Paul De Lisle and Greg Camp, and the four of them began playing together. Harwell and De Lisle are still active members today along with Sean Hurwitz, Michael Klooster, and Jason Sutter.

When Smash Mouth formed in 1994, they called themselves Smashmouth, a word commonly used in football. After playing around San Jose, recording demos and being heard on local radio, Smashmouth was signed to Interscope Records and changed their name to Smash Mouth. Their first album, “Fush Yu Mang,” came out in 1997 and went double platinum, and their song “Walkin’ on the Sun” became wildly successful.

Smash Mouth’s second album came out in 1999. “Astro Lounge” had more of a pop influence than “Fush Yu Mang,” which was more ska-influenced. “Astro Lounge” included the hit “All Star,” which was widely popularized in media and helped the album reach a triple-platinum status.

After “Astro Lounge,” Smash Mouth released five more albums, the most recent of which came out in 2012. Smash Mouth is still active, but over the last several years it has gone through several personnel changes, with only Steve Harwell and Paul De Lisle remaining constant from the beginning.
