The Spice Girls were a British pop band made up of 5 women that were formed in 1994. Each of the members had their own nickname that ended in “spice”. There was Scary Spice (Melanie Brown), Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm), Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell), and Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham).
They were produced be Virgin Records and became a global phenomenon after their first singe, “Wannabe” came out in 1996 and was number one in over 30 countries. Their debut album, Spice, sold 28 million records worldwide, breaking the record for best-selling album for a girls band.
The band’s target audience was focused on young girls, but because each member was portrayed so differently, their range of fans within their demographic was enhanced immensely. Young girls from different backgrounds could identify with single members of the band, which made their fan-base grow exponentially.
In 1997, they began filming their first feature film and their popularity was so immense, the movie broke a box office record for a Super Bowl weekend debut. Spice World was wildly popular while being negatively criticized, as the girls won a Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actresses while being nominated for six others.
There success is one of the best for all girl groups of all time and their fame is still prevalent as their names are still very relevant in the media today.
