The 90s TV Shows

The Simpsons

The Simpsons is a cult American teen adult animated series on Fox network. It focuses on political and cultural aspects of America while poking fun at the middle class lifestyle. The show was created by Matt Groening and brought to television for the first time in the form of smaller comedy sketches on the Tracey Ullman Show by producer James L. Brooks in 1987. In 1989 The Simpsons was developed into a half hour series for Fox Broadcasting.

The shows centers on a middle class family living in fictional Springfield somewhere in “Middle America”.  The father Homer (Dan Castellaneta) works at a Nuclear Power Plant as a safety inspector. His wife Marge (Julie Kavner) is a clichéd housewife and mother of 3 children: 10 year old Bart, 8 year old Lisa, and baby Maggie. Bart (Nancy Cartwright) the oldest and most mischievous of the children often goes against his parents orders getting himself into trouble. He is best friends with Millhouse Van Houten (Pamela Hayden) and enjoys skateboarding and reading comic books. Lisa the middle child is very intelligent and outgoing. Unlike her brother Bart she has a keen interest in school and fights for political and social causes. She loves jazz and plays the saxophone. Baby Maggie is the youngest member of the Simpson family; she is often seen sucking on her pacifier as she cannot speak. Although Maggie is just an infant it is suggested that she is very smart.  She often escapes from the Springfield day care, has driven Homers car, and has spelled out E=MC2 with her blocks.

Apart from the Simpsons family there are a large number of characters from the community in the show. Ned Flanders (Harry Shearer)the Simpsons next door neighbor, whom Homer detests, is a well mannered very religious Christian. Ned is a widower with two children Rod and Todd Flanders who are both very religious as well. Moe Szyslak (Hank Azaria) is the owner and bartender of Moe’s tavern, a bar frequented by Homer, a temperamental and somewhat suicidal character. He often threatens people with his shotgun if they do not pay there bar tab. He is not married nor does he have any children. He is infatuated with Marge Simpson calling her “Midge” as a nickname.

The Simpsons has become the longest  running prime-time animated television series in the United States. The show has been nominated for countless awards winning 27 Prime time Emmy Awards, 30 Annie Awards, and a Peabody Award. Time Magazine named it “the centuries best television series”.
