Titanic is a romantic disaster film revolving around the famous sinking of the RMS Titanic in 1912. The film is directed by James Cameron and was released in 1997.
Titanic begins in 1996, where a crew at sea are treasure hunting for rare and valuable diamond said to have been lost with the Titanic when it sank. However, they come up empty, only finding a picture of a woman wearing the necklace. The news makes it’s way back to Rose Dawson Calvert, a women claiming to be the the one in the picture
Rose boards the ship, and tells here story about her time on the Titanic. She details a tragic love story centered on herself, a 17-year old aristocrat, and a carefree but poor artists named Jack Dawson. She explains that at the time she was engaged to a rich and powerful man named Cal Hockley. Despite his standing, she was unhappy with her life and almost jumps from the ship in a suicide attempt until Jack saves her.
The film then sees the two fight for their love despite their differences in wealth and culture. In addition to that, the young lovers must also deal with that disastrous April 15th night in 1912 in which the Titanic sank.
At the time when Titanic was released, it was reported to have had the biggest budget ever for a film at $200 million dollars. In the end it all payed off as the movie broke records across the board. The film would go on to gross over $2 billion dollars worldwide and win 11 academy awards including best picture.
The film is also regarded as one of the greatest films ever made, and helped launch the careers of Leonardo Decaprio and Kate Winslet into superstardom.
