The 90s Toys & Games

Treasure Trolls

Treasure Trolls are a brand of toys that were popular in the 1960s. The dolls experienced a brief resurgence in the 90s when they were marketed instead as action figures to young boys.

Thomas Dam, a Danish wood-cutter invented trolls in 1959 when he could not afford a Christmas gift for his daughter, Lila. His doll soon caught the attention of all the other children in his town and soon he was making these toys by the dozen. Dam’s creations soon became a hot commodity around the rest of Europe and were eventually sold in the United States where they became a huge success.

After 20 years the fad caught on again, laying the backdrop for the bold change in direction the product would undergo in the 90s to stay relevant.

To reignite the spark of the troll toy line, Hasbro took the dolls in an entirely other direction and released the Original Battle Trolls. Original Battle trolls were an edgier, action-figure version of the older models. Each member in this series was based on a superhero or monster from other facet of pop-culture, such as the Trollminator. A poorly received TV show was also produced entitled Magical Super Trolls.

While this bold move failed to make troll dolls the coolest toy in town again, they did become slightly more popular for a short time.
