Windows 98

Windows 98 is an operating system created by Microsoft in 1998. It was released on May 15, 1998 to the mass on June 25, 1998. Windows 98 was the first operating system to use the Windows Driver Model. A number of improvements were made to the windows operating system buy its time of release; one being the System Configuration Utility. This SCU is a new system utility created to disable programs and services that are not required to run the computer. A maintenance Wizard is included in the schedules as well as an automatic Scandisk, Disk Defragmenter and a Disk Cleanup. Windows Script Host, and VBScript engines are built-in and were added to the upgraded versions.

Microsoft planned to discontinue the Windows 98 version in 2005 however due to high popularity of the OS, Microsoft made the decision to maintain the system until July 11, 2006. Windows 98 shares began to diminish by 2.7%, currently Windows 98 is no longer available for purchase. In 1999 windows was succeeded by Windows 98 Second Edition on May 5, followed by Windows ME (Millennium Edition) on September 14, 2000. Microsoft discontinued support for Windows 98 on July 11, 2006.

Windows 98 came with various accessories including Microsoft Magnifier, Accessibility, and Microsoft Active Accessibility1.1. Users were also allowed to configure the font in Notepad. Microsoft Paint began supporting GIF transparency. Hyper terminal supported the TCP/IP connection, while Imaging for Windows was also updated.
