A five-time Grammy winner, Carey has sold over 200 million records in her career, making her one of the best-selling artists ever.

Mariah is characterized by her impressive vocals with a range over 5 octaves. She also is famous for her whistling technique and helped define the late 90s to early 2000s R&B music scene through songs like “Heartbreaker”, “Honey” and other songs on her “Butterfly” album. She is known as a diva and her singing style and prowess has been compared to other musical legends like Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin. She has named iconic singers such as Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight as her influences.

Mariah Carey‘s personal life has been marked by ups and downs. Before 2001, she was hospitalized following an emotional and physical meltdown. She climbed back to the top with her 2005 album, The Emancipation of Mimi. She also had a very public tiff with Eminem starting in 2001, where Eminem claimed they allegedly had a relationship. This resulted in Mariah’s song “Obsessed” where she dressed as Eminem and portrayed him as her stalker. Eminem shot back with “The Warning”.

In 2001 Mariah Carey starred in her first feature length film, ‘Glitter.” The film had taken over three years to pull out of development, the plot was loosely based on Carey’s life, the movie is an infamous flop, bringing in low box office sales and pitiful critical reviews. She did not return to film until 2009 when she had a supporting role as a social worker in the Oscar-winning movie “Precious Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire.”
