Frasier was an American sitcom starring Kelsey Grammer that aired from 1993 until 2004. A spin-off of the popular comedy Cheers, it was one of the most successful spin-off series in TV history, and remains a fan-favorite series to this day. Episodes primarily revolved around Grammer’s titular character Dr. Frasier Crane and his psychiatry practice, but also featured an ensemble cast.
Grammer reprised his character of Frasier from Cheers, though he was initially loathe to do a Cheers-related project. Frasier took place in Seattle, far from the Cheers setting of Boston, in order to prevent most (if any) guest appearances from the Cheers cast. However, a part was created for David Hyde Pierce to play Frasier’s brother Niles based on Pierce’s excellent audition, despite a line in Cheers that stated Frasier had no siblings.
Frasier opened with the title character returning to his hometown of Seattle to host a therapeutic radio show. Frasier moves into an expensive penthouse apartment with his father (played by John Mahoney), who is cared for by a physiotherapist. Frasier’s brother Niles, also a psychiatrist, quickly becomes enamored of the therapist and spends the first seasons desperate to win her attention.
Frasier lasted for eleven seasons, earning Grammer the distinction of having played the longest-running primetime character to date (counting his appearances on Cheers). Grammer also became the highest-paid actor in American television during this time. Since its conclusion, the stars of Frasier have reunited on an episode of The Simpsons and several episodes of Hot in Cleveland.
