Beverley Hills, 90210 is one of the most popular fiction American drama series to hit television in the 90s. Produced by Spelling Television, Beverly Hills, 90210 originally premiered on Fox on October 4th, 1990. On May17th, 2000 Beverly Hill, 90210 took its final bow.
Beverly Hills, 90210 followed a group of teenagers in their day-to-day lives, where they lived in the prestigious area code residence—with massive star power and attended West Beverly Hills High School, and then later California University (all fictional schools).
The original idea of Beverly Hills, 90210 was based on following the adjustments and culture shock that twins Brandon (Jason Priestley) and Brenda Walsh (Shannen Doherty) experience when their parents move to Beverly Hills from Minnesota.
While a majority of Beverly Hills, 90210 was centered on the friendship and romantic relationships of characters, the show also focused on topical issues like gay rights, abortion, date rape, domestic violence, anti-Semitism, and drug abuse.
The series gained massive popularity in 1991, when Fox decided to air a “summer season” of the show. This was important because other TV shows were all running reruns. After running that special summer season, it became #1 on Fox’s top shows.
Many cast members including Jason Priestley and Luke Perry became idols among teens and young adults, as well as propelling Shannen Doherty and Jennie Garth to stardom and making them household names. In addition, many other members were added to the cast like Brian Austin Green and Tiffani Amber Thiessen.
