The Legend of Zelda is a high fantasy Japanese game released by Nintendo in North America in 1987. Designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka, The Legend of Zelda was one of the Super Nintendo’s most popular games, selling over 6.5 million copies. It spawned an entire franchise, complete with sequels, prequels, and merchandise. It was one of the main sources of inspiration for the role-playing video game genre.
Set in the fabled land of Hyrule, the plot focuses on a young hero named Link, a boy armed with a sword and shield, who wishes to save Princess Zelda from the clutches of the evil Ganon. In order to do so, he has to travel the land of Hyrule and collect the eight fragments of the Triforce of Wisdom. Most of the challenging gameplay occurred in dungeons, where Link would face off against demons and monsters. Each dungeon is unique, with a labyrinth of rooms connected by doors and secret passages. Dungeons also hide useful tools like a boomerang for retrieving distant items and stunning enemies, and a magical recorder. Link has to navigate through each of the first eight dungeons to get all eight pieces of the Triforce of Wisdom. Once he has all eight, he can enter the ninth dungeon to rescue Zelda.
