The 90s Video Games & Tech

Mortal Kombat

Mortal Kombat is a fighting video game series that was released in the 90s to extreme popularity. The games are known for their ultra violent aesthetics and particularly their signature “fatality” feature.

Mortal Kombat was developed by Ed Boon and John Tobias who were originally making a game starring Jean Claude Van Damme. The plans with the movie star fell through and Mortal Kombat was released instead in 1992. It’s violent content became a subject of huge controversy in America. Mortal Kombat became the first game to ever receive a “mature” rating from the ESRB.

In the wake of the massive popularity of Street Fighter II, Mortal Kombat was one of the few fighting games released in the early nineties that switched up the game play formula. Instead of holding back to block, Mortal Kombat featured a block button and offered special moves that were easier to perform. Mortal Kombat also invented the “juggling” mechanic where a player can do massive damage by keeping their opponent up in the air. Juggling has been implemented in many other fighting game series since.

The Mortal Kombat series has become something of a rival to the Street Fighter games. The debate largely focuses on the merits of Street Fighter’s more technical control system against Mortal Kombat’s sense of style and interactive backgrounds.
