Princess Mononoke is a Japanese animated film made in 1997. It was both written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the creator of other hugely successful films like Spirited Away and Howl’s Muoving Castle. Miyazaki is known for making fantastical adventure films that have gained popularity in American and has won countless awards for his films. Princess Mononoke itself was nominated for 23 films and won 21 of them from many Japanese festivals and organizations.
Princess Mononoke is a fantasy set in ancient Japan between the 13- and 1600s, known as the Muromachi period. It is about a young warrior who becomes cursed by an evil spirit and must travel find a cure. He meets Princess Mononoke and becomes involved in a struggle between spirits and humans. Like Japanese culture and religion, nature is a powerful element and the film and uses spirits to characterize natural forces, focusing on the relationship between people and their environment.
The film was well-received and Japan, and was shortly adapted for American audiences. English writer Neil Gaiman helped with the adaptation for Western culture and the film was dubbed into English with popular voice actors like Billy Bob Thorton, Jada Pinkett Smith, and John DiMaggio.
