The Sega Dreamcast was a 32-bit video game console launched by Sega in Japan in 1998 and world-wide in 1999.
After the very successful Sega Genesis and failure of Sega Saturn, the gaming titans decided it was time to launch a new console. After a very expensive and heavy marketing campaign, they launched the Sega Dreamcast to record breaking sales and critical acclaim. After only 4 days of being sold in America, the system sold 372,000 units for $132 million.
Aside from the incredible graphics and software design features, the system would introduce new and innovative games to the market as well such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Sonic Adventure, and Shenmue. However, more importantly, the console became the first to introduce an internet hook-up and playability online against other gamers.
The Sega Dreamcast was also noteworthy for it’s many accessories that it introduced to the gaming market, one of which was a VGA adapter the could be connected to computer displays and high definition TVs. It also came with a vibrating jump pack controller, and VMU memory card that was fitted with a small screen that provided additional features to certain games.
In 2001 it was announced that Sega would cease production on the console due to declining sales. In addition to that, the introduction of the Sony Playstation 2 would also play a massive role in the Dreamcast’s downfall.
To this day, despite the fact the games are no longer made for it, the Dreamcast remains one of the most beloved systems in the last 20 years. In fact, the system has become a cult-favorite amongst many gamers. While it was only around for a short while, the Dreamcast’s influence can be seen all through Microsoft’s Xbox due to its software and sequels from previous Dreamcast games.
