Limp Bizkit is a nu metal band that was formed in Jacksonville, Florida in 1994. Nu metal is a form of metal that was pioneered by Korn in the early 1990s and combines the metal genre with grunge, punk, hip hop, and other genres. Limp Bizkit is one of the most notable examples of this genre. Their style is edgy with dark themes and live shows that show off their visual aesthetic, including body paint and occasional masks.
Limp Bizkit was started by Fred Durst and Sam Rivers, who were playing in bands in Jacksonville. They decided to join and form their own band along with Sam Rivers’ cousin, John Otto. The three of them began playing and writing, and eventually their fourth and final member, Wes Borland, joined the band. These four have been the lineup for Limp Bizkit since nearly the beginning with few lineup changes and additions, and they still remain together.
After performing for a few years, Limp Bizkit was recognized when they opened for Korn and they were subsequently signed to Mojo. Before recording their first album, they switched to Flip, a record company owned by Interscope Records, which recorded many popular bands in the 90s and 2000s. Their first album “Three Dollar Bill, Yall,” was finally released in 1997, around which time Limp Bizkit began touring constantly and alongside many different bands.
After their rise in popularity, Limp Bizkit released five additional albums through 2011. For a short period in the early 2000s, regular member Wes Borland left the band for a period of over two years. Limp Bizkit was also joined by DJ Lethal on keys, turntables, and samples, who remained with the band from 1996 until 2013. Limp Bizkit still performs with their original four members and they have a seventh album, “Stampede of the Disco Elephants,” planned for release in 2014.
