Carmen Sandiego is a fictional spy who must be stopped at all costs! She appears in a variety of educational games and television shows. The only way to impede the dastardly progress of Ms. Sandiego (not even married) is to correctly guess a geographical question. Almost every product in the franchise is aimed at an audience of children ages 10-12.
Carmen Sandiego started as the star of the Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego computer game in 1985 on the apple II platform. Each of the first seven games in the series was awarded the SPA Excellence in Software Awards. Each of the games presented a unique brand of humor that kids just ate right up as they were tricked into learning stuff.
When the big wig producers over at PBS caught wind of the deadly Sandiego fever sweeping the world, they were in front of Carmen Sandiego‘s house with a contract in their hands before you could find Wisconsin on a map. The show was an off the rails success, and everyone learned where Bolivia was.
