Doug is popular animated cartoon that aired on Nickelodeon in the 90’s as one of the channels original Nicktoons. Created by animator Jim Jinkins, the series ran from 1991-1994 and then again from 1996-1999 under Disney.
Doug centered around 11-year old Doug Funnie as he moves with his family to the the town of Bluffington and adapts to life surrounded by new friends and people. According to Jinkins, Doug was based around your average kid as he’s often bewildered and often meek, but also smart and moral.
Throughout an episode of Doug , audiences would watch along as he would write in his journal and live through the trials and tribulations of the 6th grade. Along with his loyal dog Porkchop, best friend “Skeeter”, and secret crush Pattie Mayonnaise, Doug would go through typical pre-teen situations such as school dances, going to concerts, and homework.
In addition to his friends, Doug would also have to deal with school bully Roger Klotz and strict assistant principal Lamar Bone, both of which would provide Doug with many struggles. However, at times it could also be said that Roger was also a friend of Dougs.
Doug was also shown to have a wild imagination. At times he would fantasize about himself as a whole new character whether it be the superhero “Quailman” to Smash Adams (an James Bond parody) to Race Canyon (an Indiana Jones parody).
The Nickelodeon series ended in 1994, but was later picked up in 1996 by Disney who coined the new series Brand Spanking New! Doug. This series focused on Doug transitioning to age 12 and going into middle school, as well as all the changes that were happening around him.
Although Doug is no longer a series, the show remains one of the most recognizable and memorable cartoons in the last decade.
