In Living Color is a 1990 American sketch comedy television series created, written, and starred by brothers Keenen and Damon Wayans. The show premiered on April 15, 1990 on Fox Network. The idea for the name of the show came from broadcasts being streamed on television in the 1950’s and 60’s for the first time “in living color” instead of black and white. In Living Color is said to have helped launch the careers of actor/comedian Jim Carrey, Jamie Fox, and David Allen Grier. The shows Fly Girls whom would sometimes be used as extras in sketches were an all-female dance crew which consisted of celebrities such as actress Rosie Perez, actress/ dancer/singer Jennifer Lopez, and choreographer Carrie Ann Inaba. The series was one of the first sketch comedies shows on television with a predominantly African American cast. The show’s comedy sketches had a strong emphasis on black artists and subjects. The show was known for their live music performances. In season two Queen Latifah was the first musical guest among various other performer’s including: Heavy D, Public Enemy, Kris Kross, En Vogue, Eazy-E, Tupac Shakur, Leaders of the New School, Mar J. Blige, Arrested Development, Mc Lyte, Monie Love, and more. The fifth and final season of the show aired in May 1994, the last seasons sketches were no longer written by the Wayans family by that point. The series continued to have many sketch celebrity appearances by: James Brown, Rodney Dangerfield, Chris Rock, Sherman Hemsley, Bret Hart, Ed O’Neil, etc. The series went into syndication from 2005 to 2010; appearing on BET from 2005 until 2008. The show had re runs on MyNetworkTv from April to June 2008 hosted by David Allen Grier. All five seasons of the show were released on DVD from 2004-2006.
