The 90s TV Shows

Guts

Guts is an “action sports” competition hosted by Mike O’Malley and officiated by Moira “Mo” Quirk. In each episode, young athletes compete in various athletic activities in the “Extreme Arena”. The series aired on Nickelodeon from 1992 to 1995.
For every episode, three teenagers (represented by the colors red, purple, and blue) face off in four different “extreme” sports based on games like basketball, baseball, football, and soccer. To make things interesting, the events feature wacky additions like elastic harnesses, wave pools, and racing tracks. Contestants score 300, 200, and 100 points depending on which place they come in. Whoever has the most points wins the game.

The last event takes place on the Aggro Crag, a massive mountain with many difficult obstacles. This event has a different scoring system: first place is worth 725 points, second place is 550 points, and third place is 375 points.  For the Aggro Crag, contestants race to the top of the mountain, activating six “actuators” along the way. If the contestant misses an actuator, a spotter prevents them from continuing up the mountain. Some of the obstacles contestants face are strobe lights, rock avalanches, flying “snow” in the form of glitter and confetti, “nuclear flying crystals”, and steep walls.

Between events, the contestants took part in a segment called “Spill Your Guts”. During this part of the show, contestants would introduce themselves and tell the audience interesting facts about their lives.
