Heavenly Creatures is a 1994 drama directed by Peter Jackson and starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey. The two actresses, both of them debuting for the first time on the silver screen, play a pair of obsessive best friends, Pauline Parker (Lynskey) and Juliet Hulme (Winslet), who decide to kill Pauline’s mother.
The movie takes place in 1950s Christchurch, New Zealand, where Pauline and Juliet meet for the first time. They both have a sordid history of severe childhood disease and hospitalization, and they soon become fast friends. Together, the two spend all of their time together, writing stories, making clay figurines, and investing more and more time into their fantasy world, Borovnia. Over time, the two begin to believe in the “Fourth World”, a world above god and angels reserved for the best and brightest artists. As their lives slowly begin to unravel (Juliet contracts tuberculosis and fights between Pauline and her mother grow worse and worse), the two become more and more invested in these fantasy worlds, their imaginations often taking violent and disturbing turns.
When Juliet’s parents announce their plans to divorce and send her to live with a relative in South Africa, Juliet becomes hysterical, terrified that she will lost Pauline. The two plan to run away together and the only obstacle standing in their way is Pauline’s overbearing mother. Believing they have no choice, the two bludgeon Pauline’s mother to death.
