Jerry Maguire is a 1996 film spanning multiple genres including romance, drama, comedy, and sports. The movie stars Tom Cruise, Renee Zellweger, and Cuba Gooding Jr and went on to be nominated for several prestigious awards. It was both directed and written by Cameron Crowe.
Jerry Maguire follows a struggling sports agent of the same name. The plot mainly revolves around Jerry attempting to recover his career after being fired for publishing a sincere article on the state of the industry. He loses almost all of his clients except for Rod Tidwell, and leaves to start his own firm with a single mom named Dorothy Boyd. By the end of the movie Tidwell grows to become a personal friend and massive success, staying true to the philosophy in the article, and Jerry finds love with the previously heartbroken Dorothy.
The movie was a box office hit in 1996 and garnered 5 nominations for the Academy Awards that year, not to mention a nomination for best picture at the Golden Globes. Both Cruise and Gooding Junior won their respective awards at the Golden Globes for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor.
Some of the hip phrases in Jerry Maguire embedded themselves deep into the American cultural lexicon and can still be heard today. “Show me the money,” “you complete me,” “help me help you,” and “you had me at hello” are both iconic moments from the film.
