The Lion King

The Lion King is a Disney animated film, released in 1994.   The movie is set in the Pride Lands of Africa.   The movie has an all-star voice cast including Matthew Broderick, Moira Kelly, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and James Earl Jones.  The movie is centered around a newborn cub, Simba.  He is the son of the current king and queen of the land, Mufasa and Sarabi.

With the birth of Simba, Mufasa’s brother, Scar, will no longer take over the land.  Scar is not happy about this news and becomes very resentful towards Simba and his family.  Simba, a young and naïve cub, looked up to his uncle believing he was trying to teach him life lessons.  Scar took advantage of Simba and made him think it was ok to disobey his father.  Simba and his friend Nala, get attacked by a pack of hyenas, who turn out to be Scar’s friends.

Scar and the hyenas develop a plan to try and kill Mufasa and Simba, giving the kingdom to Scar.  Mufasa is able to rescue Simba from a herd of wildebeests but he himself does not make it out of the stampede.  Scar tells Simba that his father’s death is his fault, making him run away from the Pride Land.

Timon and Pumbaa come to Simba’s rescue.  Simba turns into an adult and later on runs into Nala. She tries to convince him to return home but he refuses.  Rafiki, the wise man, convinces him to return and take the Kingdom back.

The Lion King, made over $987 million worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing film of all time.  The movie has been re-released in 2002 for IMAX and again in 2011 for only two weeks.  It is also available on DVD and VHS.  The movie has also been made into a video game and into a very successful Broadway Musical.
