The Matrix is a science-fiction action film centered around a dystopian future, a false reality, and one man’s journey to becoming a savior. The movie was directed by the Wachowskis and was released in 1999.

The Matrix sees Thomas Anderson/Neo, an ordinary tech programer by day and hacker by night, longing for something more to his mundane life. One day, legendary hackers and fugitives by the names of Morpheus and Trinity contact Neo through a code, and tell him that they can show him “The Matrix” and what it is.

The communication is eventually discovered by black-suited agents who are led by Agent Smith. On the run, Neo is saved by Morpheus who tells him he has two choices: Choose between the real or the current life he lives.

As Neo seeks the truth, he awakens to find himself in a dystopian future where machines and humans battle. Morpheus explains that the life had was nothing more than a simulated facade(the matrix) controlled by the machines, who are using the humans body heat to survive.

Morpheus explains that he and his group of rebels are fighting the machines, and that only Neo can end the war between the two as he is “The One”.

Throughout the film we see Neo and the rebels travel back and forth to the matrix to where they combat the powerfully programed agents, who are trying to put a halt to the human rebellion. In addition to that Neo must do battle with his own self doubt and a trader amongst the group.

The Matrix has gone on to gross over $460 million dollars and is often hailed as one of the best sci-fi films of all time. It was also one of the most groundbreaking films at the time due to it’s cutting edge visual effects and fight scenes, including Neo’s famous “bullet time” scene. Following the first film, two sequels were later released to much acclaim.
