The Sandlot

The Sandlot is coming-of-age film centered around nine young boys, their love of baseball, and the the summer of 1962. The movie was directed by David M. Evans and was released in 1993.

The Sandlot is narrated by a young Scotty Smalls as he details the summer he moved to a new town moved with his mother so that they could live with his new step father. As the new kid in tow, Smalls volunteers to play a game of baseball with group of local kids despite not knowing the game.

After embarrassing himself during the game, Smalls is taken under the wing of group leader and baseball wiz kid Benny Rodriguez. In time, Smalls learns the game and makes quick friends with the rest of the gang as the play baseball at their sandlot.

Throughout the film the boys land themselves in some adventures involving a rival baseball team, kissing the much older pool lifeguard, and experimenting with chewing tobacco and carnival. They also find themselves in the biggest pickle they have even been in when they lose an autographed Babe Ruth baseball to the legendary and mysterious “Beast”.

While it was no box office hit, The Sandlot has amassed quite a cult following. The film has cemented it’s legacy a top baseball film and tale of true friendship. In addition to that, it has given us such memorable quotes as “You’re killing me Smalls” and “You play ball like a girl”.
