The 90s TV Shows

Singled Out

Singled Out is a game show that was on MTV from 1995 to 1998. The show’s main stars were Chris Hardwick and Jenny McCarthy, both of which hosted the show. When Jenny McCarthy left the show in 1997, MTV hired Carmen Electra to replace her.

The premise of the show was dating. Each episode had a group of 50 men and a group of 50 women competing for a date with one main contestant of the opposite sex. This main contestant was named, “The Picker”. Each game began with the “Picker” being escorted to the set while blindfolded in front of the 50 potential dates in the “Dating Pool”.

The “picker” was presented with a board that had six categories which ranged from physical attributes to leisure activities. The “Picker” was asked to pick a category and eliminate sub-categories within them. For example, a category on hair may have three sub-categories: blond, brown, red. If the “Picker” chose to eliminate blonde and red, those contestants from the “Dating Pool” who had blonde or red hair would exit. When five to eight contestants were left, the game moved on to the next round.

The next round involved a series of questions (for example: “if you had me alone in a limousine for three hours, what would you do to me?”) If the “Picker” was satisfied with their answer, he or she would “keep” the contestant to the final round. If the “Picker” did not like the answer, he or she would “dump” the contestant.

The final round involved a walkway and on the other end of the walkway was the three finalist. They were asked a series of two-choice questions and each time a contestant’s answer matched the “Pickers” they advanced one step on the walkway.

The contestant whose answers matched the “Picker’s” and reached the end of the walk-way won. But before they won there was the big reveal: the picker and the contestant stood back to back while the host read a description of the winning player to the picker. When they turned around and met each other for first time, there trip and prizes were described to them by the announcer.
