The 90s TV Shows

Tales From The Crypt

Tales from the Crypt is a 1996 horror television series that premiered on HBO. Each episode started with a tour through the cryptkeeper’s mansion down to the basement where the cryptkeeper himself hosted the show. The series being on HBO allowed full profanity, gore and nudity which were later edited for syndication purposes after being aired on regular broadcast television. In 1993 Tales from the Cryptkeeper a Saturday spin off was aired as a morning cartoon version of the original show. The original cryptkeeper was edited because producers were concerned it would scare children. A lower key animated version was developed for the Saturday morning show; John Kassir continued to voice the character. Frequent characters on the show were the Vaultkeeper and The Old Witch who fought with the Cryptkeeper to host the show.

The show was renewed for 1999 but the episodes were cut down drastically because of new FCC regulations. The Vaultkeeper and The Oldwitch were removed from the series leaving an animated Crypkeeper as the sole host of the show until the show ended in 1997. A children’s game show was developed called “Secrets of the Cryptkeeper’s Haunted House”. Show contestants would compete in different challenges through a variety of haunted houses; some being physical challenges on a set in Universal Studios Florida. A radio show was also created called “Tales from the Crypt” as a partner of The Sci-Fi channel.
